Our magazine Port News travels far, not only through Europe but also all over the world, since the website of the County Port authority has a planetary reach. Many of our international friends have welcomed our idea going several years back to make the northern wind Bura into another Croatian brand, so they send us images and films……
The idea to use the northern wind Bura as a local brand was created when one of the journalists of the Port News magazine was caught in Rogač, island Šolta on a day of announced extreme Bura. Fortunately we have been on our boat «Betalina» and immediately headed back to the safety of the port in Split, unlike many others who hurried to get onto a ferry before the sea traffic was halted due to stormy weather.
THE FOAMING SEA – A DELIGHT FOR EYES AND SOUL
If you happen to be in this part of the world in the middle of summer, try to get to Karlobag or Senj when the forecast announces a strong northern wind, called Bura here. These places are known for some of the most powerful gusts of this wind making the sea foam under wind pressure and enabling many foreign and local photographers to catch unique images of the untamed nature. A true joy for our eyes and soul. We are sure that if somebody came up with the idea to create a seating area over the canal, both Senj and Karlobag would be well visited natural open air stages for this natural phenomena.
CAPTAINS AND SKIPPERS
The port is the elemental «tool» of each port authority, at the same time a safe haven for ships against weather. Also against the wind Bura. On the other hand each situation of adverse weather conditions is an opportunity for adventurist to try to battle against the power of nature, like every seaman likes to battle the waves of the open seas. Still, under such conditions one must be very careful, captains and skippers should never let their adrenalin take over any risk for the life and safety of passengers on board or the ship itself. That is why we often publish interviews with experienced seamen in our Port News, professionals earning their living on the open seas, captains of huge cargo ships and cruise ships and skippers on nautical yachts to bring their lives closer to the general public.
WINTER TIME AT THE ADRIATIC SEA
Winter at the Adriatic is even more original than the summer time and when we speak of a winter season here, it is nothing that cannot be accomplished, it just needs a different approach, since summer tourism is a product of «mass consumption» and the winter period is the time for «two singles» you as a visitor and nature erupting under winter conditions of strong winds, foaming sea waves and deserted, jet beautiful places to visit, now free of all the masses occupying them in the summer. With the images we will try to dive with you into the winter stills, when nature is recovering in between the gusts of the southern wind Jugo and the northern, chilling wind Bura all to the beginning of another annual cycle starting in January.
